I had Heard of it, but Now,

I Have Really Discovered the Magic of Kombucha!

I actively peruse the health industry for healthy products. I recently expressed an interest in Kombucha, as I am always looking for new and healthy natural remedies. A couple of months ago, one of my sisters, Ruth, purchased a SCOBY(Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast) for me, for 10 dollars, this is what is needed to start, to brew your own Kombucha, at home, it has turned into my new hobby and passion.

There is a wealth of info online about this and many groups and videos you can join or belong to, to help you, if you need it. I got really lucky, in that the temperature where I live is always around 78-80, which is ideal for the fermentation process to really excel and work properly. 

I hope the video inspires you to try this amazingly healthy product, it is hard to put your finger on it, but it just seems to leave you feeling better and wanting more. I prefer my Kombucha with lemon and ginger, but you can flavour it with just about anything that you like. I am still experimenting with different teas and timing, but so far, preferring green tea and plain old white granulated sugar, as that is what the Scoby really likes. 

I now have 4 large brewing jars in rotation and 2 large drinking bottles in fridge rotation, at all times, each time you brew, the scoby makes a baby, so to speak, which can be sold or used to make your next batch.I hope you give it a try, it’s said, the real benefit, is it’s probiotic boost to your gut and immune system, that the bacteria in Kombucha are beneficial to your gut, much like kefir (fermented milk) and kimchee(fermented vegetables)

While each of these substances are legal to use in the US, whether or not they are safe for long-term consumption — by themselves or in combination — is a different story altogether. Many have been deemed too harmful to use in other countries.

When you consider that about 90 percent of the money Americans spend on food goes toward processed foods loaded with these additives, it’s no wonder most people are carrying a hefty toxic load that can wreak havoc on their health.

A list of ingredients that are banned across the globe but still allowed for use in America recently made the news. The list is featured in the new book, Rich Food, Poor Food, authored by nutritionist Mira Calton and her husband Jayson.

The banned ingredients include various food dyes, the fat substitute Olestra, brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate (aka brominanted flour), Azodicarbonamide, BHA, BHT, rBGH, rBST, and arsenic.

Seeing that the overall health of Americans is so much lower than other industrialized countries, you can’t help but wonder whether toxic ingredients such as these might play a role in our unhealthy conditions.

Meanwhile, Russia has announced that it plans to extend a ban on U.S. beef, pork and turkey imports coming into effect this month, due to the feed additive ractopamine in the meats. Ractopamine is a growth stimulant banned in several countries, including Russia.

Processed Foods Depend on Additives

Most commonly, additives are included to slow spoilage, prevent fats and oils from going rancid, prevent fruits from turning brown, fortify or enrich the food with synthetic vitamins and minerals to replace the natural ones that were lost during processing, and improve taste, texture and appearance. When reading product packages, here are some of the most common food additives1 to watch out for:

So why do they insist on selling inferior versions in America? Amazingly, while these foods can be created using a bare minimum of additives in the UK (and sometimes none), in the US, they’re absolutely LOADED with chemicals.

The food industry does not want us to pay attention to the ingredients nor do they care about the negative effects from eating them. They certainly don’t care about the astronomical medical bills that are a direct result of us eating the inferior food they are creating.

We as a collective nation must stop this trajectory of sickness and rising health care costs, by understanding the ingredients we are putting into our bodies. We must challenge the U.S. food industry to discontinue the use of banned ingredients that are not allowed elsewhere in the world. We deserve to have the same quality food without potential toxins.”

coco-nut1Virgin unrefined coconut oil has none of the problems associated with hydrogenated oils; in fact, unrefined coconut oil is now linked to a number of impressive health benefits.

Referred to as the tree of life in the Philippines, because they use literally every part of the plant, the coconut and specifically coconut oil, was recently vilified in the USA in 1994 when it was linked to theater popcorn and called an artery clogger. But the problem is the health threat is related to partially hydrogenated coconut oil, which researchers have in fact linked to health problems for a long time.

What the New York Times is just discovering now has been known all along to anyone who has studied the health of those who live in native tropical cultures, where coconut has been a primary dietary staple for thousands of years.

Back in the 1930s, Dr. Weston Price found South Pacific Islanders whose diets were high in coconut to be healthy and trim, despite high dietary fat, and heart disease was virtually non-existent. Similarly, in 1981, researchers studying two Polynesian communities for whom coconut was the primary caloric energy source found them to have excellent cardiovascular health and fitness. Where were all the clogged arteries and heart attacks from eating all of this “evil” saturated fat? Obviously, coconut oil was doing nothing to harm the heart health of these islanders. Isn’t it about time that America discovers the heart health benefits of coconut oil? Heart disease has been on the rise for the last 60 years in America, the same 60 years that coconut oil has been vilified!

Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Also cooking with coconut oils is far better than using polyunsaturated fats, which include common vegetable oils such as corn, soy, safflower, sunflower and canola. Why?
Cooking your food in omega-6 vegetable oils produces a variety of very toxic chemicals, as well as forming trans-fats. Frying destroys the antioxidants in oil, actually oxidizing the oil, which causes even worse problems for your body than trans-fats.
Most vegetable oils are GM (genetically modified), including more than 90 percent of soy, corn and canola oils.
Vegetable oils contribute to the overabundance of damaged omega-6 fats in your diet, throwing offyour omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. Nearly everyone in Western society consumes far too many omega-6 fats — about 100 times more than a century ago — and insufficient omega 3 fats, which contributes to numerous chronic degenerative diseases. There’s actually just one oil that is stable enough to withstand the heat of cooking, and that’s coconut oil.

Coconut water, is a better sports hydration drink than ANY of the commercially available sugary sports drinks, and is both sterile and an isotonic beverage, meaning it has the same electrolyte consistency of human blood, which enabled medics in the Pacific Theater in World War II to use it as an emergency substitute for blood plasma.

Doesn’t drinking a beverage with the same electrolyte balance as human blood sound like a good idea? It does to me. It’s also better to get your coconut water straight out of a young, green coconut and avoid the commercially available products on the market, which I consider to be a processed food.

Coconut oil also has an immune boosting fat called lauric acid and has been shown to be helpful in improving metabolic rates to facilitate weight loss. Personally I believe that unless you are allergic to coconuts you should find ways to regularly use it in your diet. I typically use one to two tablespoons a day in my morning breakfast breakfast shake, consisting of berries, kefir, fresh cilantro, kale, banana, chia seed, hemp hearts and or any combo of added fruits or greens that are in my fridge at the time.

Also, I now exclusively use virgin coconut oil as my skin moisturizer, applying it from top to bottom, that is hair/scalp all the way to feet, and, although a tad oily at first, if you rub it in good, the oiliness goes away quite quickly, and you get the added benefit of self massage 😉
